CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Sunlight streaming through the window woke Cait up. She opened her eyes as she stretched and felt a moment’s concern at the unfamiliar surroundings. Her room had been decorated by someone with a hatred of complementary colors. Then she remembered that she was in the house Susan Clark had secured for their use while they worked on the situation with Charlie Tristam. She poked Aza, who was hogging the bed beside her. “Looks like they let us sleep in.”

At some point during the night, the dragon had given up his surveillance flights and climbed in through the window she’d left open for him. He growled. Poke me again, and I will end you.

Cait climbed out of bed with another yawn. She’d put on sweatpants and a t-shirt the night before. Any improvement would need to wait until after coffee. “Okay, Mr. Grumpy. Don’t expect me to save you any food. Assuming there’s food.” I really hope there’s food. She padded barefoot down the stairs and discovered that sustenance had indeed been provided. She drew a cup of coffee from the pot on the kitchen counter and popped a bagel into the toaster, sipping while she waited.

When breakfast was ready, she topped off her coffee and carried both into the dining room, where Susan, Clement, and Garrett were seated around the computer, watching the cameras she’d deployed. They exchanged good mornings. After a few moments, Sabrina’s voice emerged from the speaker on the table. “They’re late sleepers for alleged farmers, but I’m detecting a bunch of movement inside the house.”

The biggest limitation of the devices Cait had placed the night before was that the cameras were unidirectional. They offered a wide field of view in the direction they were pointed but couldn’t see what they were attached to, which in this case was the house. She hadn’t dared place any on windowsills looking in for fear of giving away the surveillance. The other functions of the sensors were omnidirectional, allowing the infomancer to listen and track motion. Combining that with the data from the drone above provided a picture of what was going on inside the buildings.

Cait asked, “Anything yet?”

Susan shook her head, then covered her mouth, yawning. “Nope. Normal stuff so far.”

Garrett said, “We’re up, Chief. Maybe you should get a couple hours of rest. We’ll wake you if something happens.”

Susan yawned again as she stood. “I can be a heavy sleeper.”

Cait chuckled. “I have a dragon. If you refuse to get up, he’ll singe your toes for you. It’ll make him happy, and I guarantee you’ll get out of bed. Win-win.”

The other woman offered a fake scowl, muttered, “Insubordination,” and left the room.

Cait sat while the others chuckled. “I like her.”

Cait replied, “Me too. Still miss Simon, though.”

Garrett said, “We should throw a party for him. I checked in yesterday. He’ll be done with rehab before long.”

The news brought a smile to Cait’s face. “Outstanding. I bet his wife is happy about that.”

“You’d think so. Simon thinks she might’ve gotten used to not having him around.
